Kayak The Lower Laguna Madre

Paddle across the USA's largest estuary system, the Lower Laguna Madre.  With over 268 square miles of water with an average depth of 2 1/2 feet, the Lower Laguna Madre is a kayak fisherman's dream.

We use Freedom Hawk Kayak's Expedition 14 model kayaks for our trips.  These are the finest, most comfortable shallow water kayaks on the market.  The kayaks are perfect for our area, we are sure you will agree

Our standard trips begin and end at our waterfront lodge in Arroyo City.  Anglers will be shuttled via shallow running bay boats to the best location based upon the weather of the day.   Typically we head into the wind and travel several miles before dropping off the anglers and their kayaks.  For us, Green Island is a popular pick up or drop off spot.

Anglers can expect the water to be clear and shallow.  And with the Freedom Hawk Expedition 14, anglers will be able to sit, stand or sit in a chair with and umbrella for shade while drifting across the flats.  It is remarkable how comfortable these kayaks are.

On days with winds of 10 to 25 miles an hour, there is minimal paddling to be done.  For the most part it will be your job to maintain a drifting direction to a predetermined pick up location.  We will use our waterfront lodge in Arroyo City for accommodations.  Kayakers will be able to cover miles of water in a single day with minimal effort.

This is an fishing adventure that will require you to be in reasonable physical condition.  Anglers will be in kayaks for several hours at a time drifting over miles of shallow water.

Redfish & Speckled Trout are the most sought after species.  We recommend that everyone bring a conventional rod (spinning or bait caster) even if they are planning on fly fishing.  Sometimes the conditions are such that fly fishing out of a moving kayak on a windy day is not much fun.

Some of our guides like medium lightweight spin rods with matching reels.  Minimum 150 yds. of 10 to 12 lbs. test on your reel.  20lbs. braided line with a 6 lbs. diameter works extremely well.  Gold spoons, Gulps and traditional soft plastics in a variety of colors, weights and no weights will get you set for most situations.  We will get with you before your trip to discuss and hot lures or flies.

Fly rods should be 7 to 9 weight with matching reel, loaded with floating line and minimum 200 yds backing.  Leaders can be as simple as a stretch of 15 lbs. test to the pre packaged tapered leaders in your local shop.  10, 12, 15 lbs. test leaders and tippett material are sufficient.  Redfishing is not all that technical.  You will be more concern about the condition of your tackle and knots, the larger fish will test them.  Speckled trout fishing tends to be more technical sometimes requiring a stealth approach with thinner leaders, better casts and fishing fighting techniques.  Specks are blessed with some very sharp teeth that can cut a line quickly, particularly right next to the boat.  Keeping the hook in the side of its mouth and controlling it's shaking head is a challenge.

Flies are pretty simple.  A selection of clousers, sea ducers, spoon flies and whatever else you have in your box will work fine.  Give us a call or email if you want more technical fly information.  We will put you in touch with one of our local fly tyers so you guys can get into the details.

For first timers.  We will give you a complete orientation on how to get the most out of your Freedom Hawk Kayak while on your paddle.  Everything will be ready and waiting for you upon arrival.
